Although Argentina did not dominate the Copa América tournament in its early years, it soon became one of the most successful teams in the competition. Argentina won its first South American Championship title in 1921 and went on to win three more titles in the same decade, in 1925, 1927, and 1929.

Argentina won its fifth Copa América title in 1937, and then went on to win the title an unprecedented seven times in the next 22 years. Despite the fact that Argentine legend Diego Maradona never won the Copa América, Argentina won the tournament again in 1991 and 1993, under the leadership of Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Simeone.

Argentina is the current defending Copa América champion, having defeated Brazil in the 2021 final in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike their record in the FIFA World Cup, Brazil has not been as successful in the Copa América as Uruguay and Argentina. After winning two championships in the first five years of the tournament, Brazil had a long period of underperformance.

However, they won three America Cups in the pre-Copa América era, and their 7-0 victory over Paraguay in the 1949 Copa América final remains the biggest Copa América final win ever.

Brazil’s success in the Copa América began to revive in the late 1980s. They won their fourth Copa América title in 1989 and then won five titles from 1997 to 2019, despite also finishing as runners-up 11 times.
